Here's my latest painting. I took one of the layouts I had drawn during the school year and decided to practice my digital painting on it. I altered the dimensions and composition a little bit based off of what I have learned since the original sketch in hopes of improving on it. With most of my paintings thus far, I find that I have a tendency to spend way too much time on the details. So this project was really focused on loose brush work and implied detailing. I also played around with brushes a bit more. This has definitely been my fastest painting so far, and overall I am pretty happy with it. But I still am a long way from the point I want to be at, which just means more practice. Stay tuned!

ReplyDeleteThe gem glow is perty, but the foreground and background have too similar colour values. Push that contrast boi! And the gold around the water should reflect more blue hues. It also needs more purple!
ReplyDeleteTim! This is awesome! Love the colours and the "implied detail" works well. I kinda liked the detail on the left side on the original sketch, but looks great without it as well.

Mel - I thought about that a lot while I painted this. I found it really difficult to separate the FG and BG in terms of value without ruining the atmosphere. I need to work on my color theory quite a bit. And that's a whole lot more purple than I ever use!
Izzy - Thanks Izzy. I tried to have some more fun with colors this time as I feel it's a bit of a weakness. I see what you mean by the details on the left, especially since they are so apparent on the right side. I was afraid of over detailing the foreground and taking attention away from the ship.
